The Chicago-Latrobe 2559 series short length drill bit is made from cobalt steel with a TiN coating and has a 135-degree split point for penetrating without a pilot hole when used on ferrous materials. The short length provides rigidity and strength to reduce tool deflection and breakage. Cobalt steel provides extended tool life compared to high-speed steel drill bits, and maintains the tool's toughness and hardness in high drilling temperatures. The TiN (titanium nitride) coating offers increased hardness for better wear resistance and a longer tool life than an uncoated drill bit. The self-centering 135-degree split point that penetrates hard material without a pilot hole and produces smaller chips that reduce clogging compared to a 118-degree point. Compared to a standard drill bit, this bit has a thicker web for increased strength and rigidity.
